A Little Bit About Feng Shui

Author: Albert Hendra Wijaya

I think most of us (not to mention as a Taoist) must have heard or talking about Feng Shui. Back in 80ies -90ies there has been people who interested and study this topic. We have to admit the existence of Feng Shui is very affecting, especially in Chinese life and it's all flow away until now. It's obvious that Feng Shui is also affecting western only it's not as strong as in Asia. The Westerns also includes Feng Shui aspects in their plans of room decorating. Even now there's many architects learn and using Feng Shui in their architectural designs.

Nowadays there are many books about Feng Shui in the market and most of them if about Feng Shui for home or building. It will be difficult for us to find Feng Shui in graveyard (even there is but it too shallow and short). It's clear enough that Feng Shui for house/building is trustable comparing Feng Shui for graveyard, which is felt is only an old tradition. They don't realize that actually Feng Shui is including Feng Shui for graveyard and Feng Shui for home/building.

The importance of room dor and it's touch are already learned for almost every country in the world, started form the beginning of civilization (more less 2500 year BC). Construction, decor and building architectural are blended from technology and art, where we can see in the ancient buildings left.

Every improving culture at that time seemed like are having their own soul that is resulting unique characters and profiles. All of them have become their nation reflections and also their modern culture.

One of the oldest cultures in the world is Chinese, which is strongly affected by Taoism and Confucius. The improvement of the civilization is started thousand of years before century, and created a lot of pre-invention in every life aspects. In about 2000 BC to 1000 BC, the Chinese had known the world of medication, sociology, economy and other technology. One of them is the method of predicting and analyzing room dor, which is known as Feng Shui. Feng Shui is assumed as the development of I Ching manuscript, which has been compiled as a prediction manual at that time.

The word Feng Shui came from Feng that means as wind (direction) and Shui that means as water (place). From the word Feng Shui itself this method was already exist and improved long before the Chinese knew compass, when the determination of a good place is based from water and wind mixture.

Taoism was improving very fast and much knowledge was born. One of them is Feng Shui. Feng Shui based on reasonable and logic concept. There's a story that this prediction is very trusted many times ago by the Chinese emperor, so the expert is considered as Royal advisor. The expert has a very important role and was believed they're having a great supernatural and understood nature's secret. That's why prediction knowledge is not world wide to learn it's all because to cover this position, only has been taught generation by generation.

Main logic of Feng Shui can be shortened as follow:

Nature is a composite of substances that are in one space dimension and time which always change, because of the energy that naturally reacting one to another to harmony. People who lives in earth are also have energy. If someone was living in a place which having a good energy and a good balance of substance then this person will have a good effect of them. This is also work for graveyard, but things which is affected from the graveyard (person who got buried) is his/ her children because they are having same relationship and genetics.

Graveyard Feng Shui

Most of the Chinese, people's grave is very important, because it can infect his alive family. Grave has to be made as good as they can besides all the mention above is also as the proved that the family is taking good care of it and also as a bound between the generation. That's why every year there's a day called Chin Ming (Ceng Beng). They gathered and praying in their ancestor's graveyard. There're some things have to be taken note in graveyard Feng Shui such as: dragon -hole - dirt that bury the hole - direction. Also the grave shape, grave stone and also the timing to bury. The good and the bad thing about graveyard Feng Shui will be clearly seen in their male generation within one year. Usually people will avoid re-creating the graveyard shape, if the grave is considered good or it's okay. But if there's some signs or bad influence inheriting the family, well it's time to check the grave shape (by the expert of course) and being re-create or re-condition if still got chances. All of the works will heal the bad influence and perhaps will getting better. Nowadays, graveyard Feng Shui is not as perfectly applicable since the movement of modernization and its environment.

Home / Building Feng Shui

Today's home Feng Shui seems a lot more interested and more common by most of the people. Perhaps of the influence is very clear & strong enough to feel and to construct someone's life because the application is real enough in affecting life patterning. To create room / home dor in Feng Shui has to meet these aspects: sunlight, air circulation, safety, esthetic, cleanness, comfortable, and color (psychological matter). Of course the direction, shape and land location have to be in a good function as the first step.

Besides all of those things, home Feng Shui is also known as things that related to the house itself such as convex and concave, etc. Those things are actually came from the Tao which are also very seldom to use in many modern houses / building, but it's often the shape of those things are for the goodness and to reject negatives influence.

Well, that's the short review about Feng Shui. Each of us sure has his own opinions about these Feng Shui matters. But as a Taoist, hopefully we were expected to have our logic point of view.
