Why We Must Go To The Temple?
Author: Leo Translated by: Bernard Wong
Taoism worships many gods. It was influenced more or less by the Chinese tradition, which in the past had already known the way to the God. That is the reason why there are a lot of temple built and used by the Chinese as places to worship gods.
The main purpose of a temple is to create a place to worship whereby people who believe, place statues of someone who had done great contributions to human beings and respect him/her. It is also used as a tool to remember his/her goodness in our daily life to always be helpful to others. That's the main reason to establish a temple.
The prayers in the temples come from several religions.
In Taoism, there are:
- Tai Shang Lao Jun (
)
- Er Lang Shen (
)
- Jiu Tian Xuan Nu (
)
- Guan Gong (
)
- Fu De Zheng Shen (
)
- Tian Shang Sheng Mu (
)
- Xuan Tian Shang Di (
)
- Kwang Cek Chun Wang
- Pao Sen Ta Ti
- Chai Sen Ye
- Sien Thien Sang Ti (gods)
In Confucianism, there is Kong Hu Cu (Confucius).
In Buddhism, they worship Mi Lek Fuk, Kwan Im Po Sat, Bodhisatwa (Po Sat).
In everyday life, there are some people who go to the temple not only to worship but also to ask for something. And some of their wishes are granted so that they tell others through mouth to mouth and finally temple becomes a place ask anything to fulfill humans desire for wealth, reputation, love, luck, etc. So it finally becomes a tradition.
From time to time, the main purpose of going to the temple becomes blurs. Many people come to the temple always have some purpose to ask for something. It does not mean that it is not allowed to ask but initially we have to understand the meaning of going to the temple.
Temples are built not only for people to beg for something but also to worship. When we are visiting we should forget all our busy activity and spent the time to recall about God as our protector by paying respect to the Deities that are in the temple while also reflecting their way of lives and characters that we must imitate. Therefore, we should not go to the temple only when we have problem and we should not forget about going to temple when we are happy.
If we can go to the temple regularly to pray, we can always remember the Gods and the Deities so that if we want to do something bad, we can control it. If we can live our life in a good way, which is to respect our ancestors, parents and the Deities, then when we encounter any difficulties, the Deities will gladly help us.
We believe that human being has his or her own destiny. So before helping us, the Deities will initially see how we behave in our daily life. Therefore we are advised to often do good deeds and donate.
People who do not understand the main purpose of going to temples, usually do not have strong faith because they only expect the temples to fulfill all their wishes. If their wish is not fulfilled then their faith will easily fade away.
