Home > Rivulets > Between Tale And Logic Zao Jun Ye (Ciao Kun Ya - Hokkian) is often recognized as Zao Wang Ye (Ciao Ong Ya - Hokkian), and His most popular name is god of kitchen. The 24th of the twelfth month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar is usually celebrated as a big day of god of kitchen. On the day, there is always a ceremony and it is a part of habit and tradition. Only few people know its history and meaning. So when our child ask, we only can answer with a tale and we often make it scarier so that they are afraid and obey. At that day, people make worship while he is going to heaven meeting God. Legend says that He will report everything we have done. Because of that, in the celebration we do something good to make Him pleased and hope He will only report good things to God. Usually we put the picture or statue of Zao Jun in the middle of altar. In the right and left side we put two poems written on red paper and one poem above it horizontally. It says "High Majesty, tell our goodness in heaven and bring the prosperity when you come down from heaven". In the purpose to "bribe" god of kitchen to receive good thing and blessing, they provide delicious food and fresh fruits. In the highlight, it is sticky food that made from wheat. Why? Because after god of kitchen eats it, they hope that His mouth becomes stiff and when He meets God, He can't speak and can't report any bad things we have done. Wow, that's so cruel! God became ding-dong? Even we, as a human being, still can talk after having such food, how can you think god can't? And do you think that god eats them? In Chinese history, There are many tales and myths known. Other example is in Chinese interment, we usually flame fake money, fake house, fake cars, and other fake treasure that made from paper. They say to make his or her life more prosperous in the other world. The meaning of Tales Tales and myths actually tell us about our current situation by taking us to the past. They take us from reality and go to the imagination world. The main purpose is not only to remember and respect our ancestor, but also to think about our present. From history (we are not sure if it is right or wrong), we often heard about people who made a lot of goodness and then became god. One of them is god of kitchen. Who is god of kitchen? None of us really knows who He is. But one thing for sure, kitchen is one of important aspects in our life. Everyday we need food and food is cooked in kitchen. And kitchen is operating if we still got revenue. In other word, kitchen is part of our life. Bless and proper that we get in the first place is food as our primary needs, other things are second. Because of that, we must thank God that we still have food to eat. So myths or tales are actually search and fact of values in life. That's out life at the present .Not only at present, myths take us to walk in the past or in the imagination world. Why? Because human never satisfies with the present condition. Human always tries to understand more aspects in their life. Myth is a human search to understand the inner part of any objects and situations. Myth appeared because people want to know the secret of nature, the secret of life. Every time we hear tales, myths, or stories, our emotions are involved. We can get the meaning when our emotions are involved. This happen because when we tell myths, we actually talk about ourselves. Faith and belief are mirrors of a mix of us with outside world, which is tradition, religion, moral, etc. Because of the obscure meaning from myth, we often use symbol, or parable. The meet with Logic Human life can not be seen only from our appearance. Human being has feeling, emotion, and intelligence. In our life there are many things and events done emotionally rather than rationally. Human's feeling and emotion are subjective because it is seen from individual point of view that differs from other. The difficulties are that our emotion is hard to be explained and to be understood by others. That is why there are many things that can't be understood using only our logic. Life is going on. Duty and work are waiting for us. However, we are human being that live in the society and we need to communicate and interact with others. Since there are many things that are hard to explain with words, therefore a lot of misunderstandings occur. The reason behind it is lack communication skills. Then communication can't flow smoothly. And the information delivered is not the one that we want. In everyday life we can communicate with correct grammar, certain approach and systematically. And this is easily done for expressing a simple thing. However, It doesn't work to explain things such as myths, because there are a lot of details and points in it. Myth of god of kitchen became less meaningful if we see it in logic way. Example:
In above statements it is clear that human being is a subject and kitchen is an object. But when it comes to myth it is different. Subject and object is not important in myth. The most important thing is the meaning. A Myth is like a picture. When seeing a picture, everybody need say nothing. Because the message and the meaning can be recognized from insight. Example: when we see picture of our beloved person (dad, mom, and our lover), then picture can say a lot of things when we see the picture, our feeling get involved, and there are some thing that is difficult to say logically. When logic is a way to explain thing based on fact and mind, then myth is an invitation to think and catch the inner meaning. In myth, clear or fuzzy thing from life being accepted as a union. In logic way, everything must in clear condition; every fuzzy thing must be eliminated. Logic still needed When logic is used, things are getting narrower and straightforward. There is no emotion involved and people have to be frank. And things must be in order. Different things can't be mixed e.g. religion and history. However logic is still needed. The usefulness of thinking logically is to allow our mind to think objectively and avoid over emotion. If we are under too much emotion, we can't think clearly. As we know, everything has its pro and con. And logic has its negative points. Thinking too logically makes us lose our feeling and spontaneity. In the other side, myths and tales invite us to be silent, full of admiration and astonished. In conclusion, logic and emotion are equally important. To achieve best result we need to use both. |
