Home > Teaching & Philosophy > Wu Wei In A Simple Point of View Author: Liem Kien Kok There are many articles about Wu Wei (to do / to give without any expectation of reward or appreciation what so ever) that is contained in writings regarding Tao. Allow me to purpose my opinion about Wu Wei as far as my limited knowledge and capability. Wu Wei is "to-do" but feel like "have not done it". Having an action as if haven't had it. Which later means it would come up with a result of an action that close to have taken no action at all. The other quite popular term is "efficient and effective". Lao Zi ( ), the author of Dao De Jing ( ), teached about Wu Wei, because it is very saving energy and ended with a better result as possible. Why is it so? By more observing, may be Lao Zi had been able to see and draw a conclusion that every thing we have done reluctantly would result unsatisfactory and something that is over done would come across a lot of obstacles and hindrances. That is what Wu Wei is teached for. However, Wu Wei is not as easy as it is said; on how we are doing it and when we are doing it, it is an art of its own, all have to be at the right timing. The foundation of Wu Wei is on a sharp observation that followed by a right way of thinking so that able to produce a satisfactory result. Therefore, Wu Wei is something attractive and interesting. Actually, Wu Wei is based on the nature's equilibrium. Same as when we start to grow rice, the chosen time is when raining season has started, so that we would get a better crop as expected. So by observing and accurate thinking then we could do anything with lesser actions but it would yield a better result. To know the existence of the nature's supporting, it needs observation. The support of the nature is exist by using the rhythm of the nature which has its' own timing. In fact, every thing has its' own timing, what the problem is whether we want to observe and open our mind towards the nature or not. Those actions I call them "natural". It means that they are accord with the rhythm of nature or in harmony with it. Like, if it is cold, wear the jacket. A very tall tree is easily toppled down. A knife that is too sharp is easily blunt. The way to learn and train ourselves so that we could be Wu Wei is back to ourselves. I hope this simple overview could give a bit more of understanding to all of you. |
